ABOUT ME
My Story
I have worked in the area of learning and academic success since 2009. I am a trained chemist, but I have a true passion for helping people reach their true academic and life potential.
I am also a strong advocate for those who live with physical and/or learning disabilities. At the age of 9, I was diagnosed with dyslexia (trouble with letters and numbers) and dysgraphia (trouble with writing). I started off in special education classes and was told going to college was only a dream. But today, I stand before you as a Ph.D. chemist.
I ultimately believe that it is not where you start the race that matters, but that you finish the race. I grew up in Southfield Village, one of the worst low-income housing projects in the state of Connecticut in the '80s, '90s, and early 2000s. I also came from a single-parent home, raised by my mother who taught me and my 5 brothers the value of God, family, and education. But despite where I started, I was resilient and finished my academic race. Now, I dedicate my life to helping others finish their academic race, too!
In addition to being an academic learning specialist, I have taught both General and Organic Chemistry lectures and labs at The College at Brockport, Xavier University of Louisiana (where I obtained my B.S. in Chemistry), and Louisiana State University (where I obtained my Ph.D. in Chemistry). I also design and perform low-cost science demos for K-12 students and the community to get people, especially young students, excited about science.
Lastly, I am happily married to Dr. Amanda Kelley, who is a physician, and I am the proud father of a 11 year-old autistic son, Algernon Jr. I am also an ordained minister in the Apostolic Faith.
